Copper mammoth earring
2018 Earring Challenge - Week 3 of 52.
I am participating in the Instagram 2018 Earring Challenge. Each week I will be creating a new pair, posing them on Instagram and listing them in the shop. 52 pairs for the year. While I’d love to do some glamour shots of the earrings, the first ones up will be straight from the bench.
I plan on trying out new techniques and designs throughout the challenge.
For this week, I took cutouts from some saw pierced cuffs that I am making, and used them to create four pairs of earrings. Fox, hedgehog, mammoth and hummingbird.
To cut the cuffs out, a pattern is placed on the cuff, pierced with a very small drill, and sawn out with a hair fine blade. I planned the drill holes so they could be incorporated into the piece that would be sawn out. In the hummingbird, mammoth and fox cuffs, the hole is where the ear wires are soldered on.
After each animal was cut out, I used stamps and files to create the texture on the piece. I domed each one to give it a more lifelike shape, and then soldered on ear wires before adding some heat patina and a waxed finish.
These earrings are one of a kind. I will be making a second pair of the fox and hummingbird earrings, but the stamping and patina will vary from set to set.
